Aide-Vision is a Congolese non-profit organization with its base in Goma, a city in the province of Nord Kivu in the East of the DR Congo. DR Congo is the biggest country in Central Africa. Goma is located at the border with Rwanda, north of the beautiful Lake Kivu. Though the government of DR Congo announced a peace agreement in 2003, the Eastern Provinces of the country have experienced armed conflicts and insecurity since then. As a result, eye care has not had a chance to develop. The prevalence of blindness is estimated 1,2 % in DR Congo. According to the national plan Vision 2020 of DR Congo, 50% of blindness and visual impairment is caused by senile cataract. The population of the south of Nord Kivu has approximately 2,5 million people, with an estimated population of 1 million in Goma. This would mean that there are about 30.000 blind people in the region where Aide-Vision is working. According to the WHO and Vision 2020, 80% of all visual impairment can be prevented, treated or cured. That means there is a lot of work to be done!

Aide-Vision has a branch in Bukavu, South Kivu province, a city at the south coast of Lake Kivu. And it also has a branch in Bunia, a small town in the Province Orientale. The services in these locations are limited to optical services only. It is in the plan of Aide-Vision to strengthen the activities in these two locations.
